Environment Artist

Unannounced Project


Currently unannounced narrative indie studio is looking for an Environment Artist to create compelling 3D Environments for our upcoming debut title. Women, Queer and BIPOC candidates are especially encouraged to apply. This role is remote and provides flexible work hours. Project communication is online, including calls/screen share. Compensation commensurate on skills and relevant experience.


Role:

The individual we’re looking for will be able to help take ownership of 3D Environments for an indie narrative project currently in pre-production.

  • Sculpt, model, and texture: environments, architecture, terrain, foliage, and props.

  • Ability to accurately take ideas from 2D concept to 3D format.

  • Push boundaries of art and stylization in 3D form.

  • Create skydomes/skyboxes for scenes.

  • Prepare models for in-engine use and provide support for in-engine implementation.

Needs:

We don’t expect or require a set number of years’ experience or shipped titles for this role. If candidates feel they can perform the listed abilities and can demonstrate the following qualifications, we will consider your application.

  • Maya/3DS Max, ZBrush, Substance Designer, Substance Painter, Photoshop, Unreal Engine.

  • Clear understanding of level design, natural environment creation, terrain creation, and lighting best practices.

  • Create environments with artistry and attention to: form, shape, silhouette, and gameplay needs.

  • Collaborate with the Creative Director, Art Director, and team as applicable throughout the process.

  • Ability to meet key milestone deadlines.

  • Implement feedback from the Art Director in a timely manner for deliverables.

  • Work solo and with game designers/engineers to ensure assets integrate as expected in the engine.

  • Prior experience working with lighting in-engine to best understand asset needs.

  • Experience with stylized asset creation.

  • Experience with PBR workflow.

  • Proven understanding of guiding eye through use of color/value distribution, both for individual assets as well as the cohesive whole.

  • Experience working from concept art and translating 3D in a way that enhances visual form.

  • Problem-solving capabilities and technical understanding of engine-facing needs.

  • Communication, independent time-management and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work remotely and communicate via calls/screen share video conference.

  • Task driven, self-motivated, proactive.

Nice to haves:

  • Expertise with terrain systems and other third-party tools in Unreal Engine.

  • Level design background with interest in gameplay pathing creation.

  • Traditional arts background with strong exemplified knowledge of lighting and digital painting skill sets.

  • Experience with baking and optimization for level design/environment in-engine needs.
